Koh Tao Diving Season

Koh Tao Weather and Diving Season

When is the best Koh Tao diving season? It is an often-asked question, when is the best time to come diving in Koh Tao? What about the weather?  What is the visibility like?  Wouldn’t it be great if the weather followed a strict schedule? But that would be a bit boring as well, not? Actually, it would be great for organizing your trip but. In reality, each year is different from the last however here is a general guide to the weather. In this blog article, we write about Koh Tao weather and diving season.

Diving In Spring Between January And February

The start of springtime and the weather can be changeable with the after-effects of winter/monsoon, the sea starts to get warmer from a low of 26C you do need one of our 3mm shorty wetsuits and visibility starts to get better but can be hit and miss.

Diving In Koh Tao Between March And May

Summertime, when it gets really hot, really hot.  Visibility is improving from good to great, the sea is calm everything is improving from the spring; the water temperature can be 30C+, no need for a wetsuit now.  This the best Koh Tao diving season in my opinion. The Songkran Water Festival (Thai New Year) is on April 13th, it’s great fun and the water fights help with the relief from the heat. Everyone joins in the fun from tourists to hotel staff.

What About Diving Between June And August?

Cooling winds coming from the west and occasional thunderstorms on the mainland in the evening make for spectacular sunsets.  We normally dive on the east coast of the island this time of year as it is not affected by the winds.  The water temperature starts to “cool” & visibility can be less than in summertime due to the winds stirring the water up.  But the best part is we can still go diving.

Diving In Koh Tao In September Or October

Our tropical autumn season starts and temperatures start to “cool” on the island and in the water (28C is cool right?).  The cooling summer winds have stopped the European holiday season has ended and diving conditions are great.  We may get the odd storm coming in from the Philippines but it’s a welcome cooling on the island.  This is my favorite time of year, no longer high season busy with tourists and diving conditions are great on Koh Tao.

Rainy Dive Season In November And December

Being a small island we are less affected by the monsoons than the mainland or other areas of South East Asia.  We do get on-and-off rain and at times it is quite hard, not great for getting a suntan but it does fill the reservoirs and wells ready for the dry summer months.  The water temperature starts to cool but it can feel warmer under the water than on the boat. But do not worry as the rain is still warm and Koh Tao diving season is all year round.
