How to Get Around Koh Tao

What is the best and cheapest way to explore Koh Tao? Read on to learn more about how to get
around Koh Tao using various transport options.

Most visitors have a list of ‘must-visit’ viewpoints and beaches they’d to go to during their stay, and a shortlist of other island activities they’d like to try. So if you’re looking for info on the best ways to explore the island while you’re visiting us to take your Koh Tao diving courses, you’re in the right place. The good news is that the island is small, and there is a lot to explore and plenty to see outside of scuba diving. The roads are in good condition and link the three west coast villages of Sairee, Mae Haad, and Chalok, as well as more remote locations on the east coast. Transport here comprises rental scooters, taxis, speedboats, longtail taxi boats, pushbikes, and e-bikes – and it’s easy to walk here too! Here’s the lowdown on how to get around Koh Tao using each method.

How to Get Around Koh Tao by Foot

If you are staying in accommodation close to our Koh Tao diving school on Sairee Beach, getting around by foot for most of your stay is feasible. If you want to explore further afield, there is a small walking street that leads from Sairee all the way to Mae Haad. There are also some excellent hiking trails on the island ranging from short walks to half-day adventures.

Our Top Tips for Getting Around by Foot

1. Wear a pair of walking shoes or trainers/sneakers for anything off-road.

2. Take plenty of water, mosquito spray, and sunscreen.

3. Take a phone in case of emergency.

4. Take a map from your resort or download a GPS app to your phone.

5. If you go hiking, let someone know when you expect to be back so they can check on you
if you’re late.

How to Get Around Koh Tao by Scooter

Koh Tao scooter rental/motorbike rental is by far the most popular mode of transport, with prices starting from around 200THB per day. Hiring your own wheels gives you the flexibility to explore further afield once you’ve completed your diving certification. Koh Tao is safe to explore by scooter as long as you take your time, and there are plenty of amazing viewpoints and beautiful beaches to visit. However, we recommend you do some research or ask one of our team before you book your Koh Tao scooter rental, as some providers are easier to deal with than others.

Our Top Tips for Getting Around by Scooter

1. Go with a renter who will take a cash deposit or copy of your passport rather than keeping the actual document.

2. Take photos and videos of any existing damage to your motorbike rental before you drive off, and be sure to check the brakes and headlights are working properly.

3. Always wear a helmet.

4. Avoid straying from the main road onto gravel or dirt tracks unless you are already an experienced and confident driver.

5. Reminder: we drive on the left in Thailand!

How to Get Around Koh Tao by Taxi

Are there taxis on Koh Tao? Yes. Are they cost-effective? Not really. One-way prices start at 400THB for the short 2km journey from Mae Haad to Sairee. However, many diving schools and resorts offer complimentary pickup and drop-off services from the pier if you pre-book. Taxis are mostly 4×4 pickup trucks with open seating in the back, rather than the taxi cabs you’ll be used to back home.

Our Top Tips to Get Around Koh Tao by Taxi

1. Check if the diving packages or accommodation you’ve booked include a complimentary pick-up before you arrive.

2. If you want to go somewhere that requires a taxi, try to share with a group to reduce the cost.

3. Try politely bargaining with the taxi driver. There’s no guarantee, but they may compromise on a cheaper rate if you’re here during a quiet time.

4. If you need to be somewhere at a certain time, it’s best to book ahead or the day before.

5. Try to have smaller notes with you rather than a stack of 1000THBs, as drivers don’t always carry lots of change.

How to Get Around Koh Tao by Boat

Chances are, you’ll get several great views of the island from the sea and visit some of the smaller beaches and bays during your Koh Tao dive courses on the Mojo Divers boat. However, there are a couple of more leisurely options for boating around Koh Tao. Diving certification schedules don’t often allow us extra time for extended stops. So if you want quality beach time at a remote bay, it’s best to go back using a speedboat charter or longtail taxi boat once you’ve completed your diving activities. One-way longtail taxi fares start at around 300THB, and you can hire a longtail for the day for about 1500THB. Private speedboat charters will set you back around 5000THB+ for a half-day trip.

Our Top Tips for Getting Around by Boat

1. Sunscreen is a must. Even though you’ll get a breeze as you travel, you’ll still burn easily.

2. Try to share with a larger group to reduce the cost.

3. Have a list of beaches and bays you want to visit so you can tell the driver exactly where you want to go.

4. Be open to changes. If the weather is windy or the sea is wavy, the boat captain will recommend alternatives that allow for a safer and more enjoyable trip.

5. If you’re prone to seasickness, take pills before you get on the boat. If you leave it too late, they won’t work effectively.

How to Get Around Koh Tao by Pushbike/ E-Bike

We’ve covered all the main bases already, but there are a couple of final options for visitors who feel a little more athletic: pushbikes and e-bikes. If pedal power is your preferred mode of transport, you’ll be rewarded with many stunning views with plenty of opportunities to hop off and grab a photo or ten! Mountain bikes cost around 100THB per day, and e-bikes rent for around 200THB per day.

Our Top Tips for Getting Around by Bike

1. Research and book ahead if possible. Pushbikes and e-bikes are not as popular as scooter rentals, so there’s not as much choice of where to rent from.

2. When you sign the rental agreement, take photos and videos of any existing damage.

3. Be sure to check the brakes are working and that the tires are in good condition.

4. Always wear a helmet.

5. Be constantly vigilant of other road users to maximize your safety. Some of the locals drive their cars and scooters fast!
